Giro d'Italia 2008 - Atmosphere

The 2008 Giro d'Italia started from Palermo, southern Italy on May 10 and was held over 21 stages until June 1.

The Giro D'Italia is the first of the big three Tours, followed in July by the Tour de France and the Vuelta in September. For many, including Alberto Contador, it is the hardest physically, but probably more extreme is the pressure felt by all at the Tour. For all concerned the Giro is more accessible, even friendly, the officials are more laid back and although the fans are just as manic, you can always find a spot to watch the action.

The Giro also has the Dolomites, which are truly majestic in nature and straddle the Italian and Austrian border. The big money tends to migrate toward Cortina leaving much of the German (Also Ladina) speaking areas relatively free from the worst commercial developments.

We stood on top of the Passo Fedaia on stage 15 and walked up the very steep trip up from San Vigilio Di Marebbe to Plan De Corones for stage 16.
