The Grand Prix Scheldeprijs 2008

The 2008 Grand Prix Scheldeprijs held on April 16 from Raismes to Denain near Antwerp.

Mark Cavendish repeated his 2007 win when he lunged under Tom Boonen's (Quickstep) victory salute and took the race on the line.

Cavendish said that he wanted to make up for his disappointment at Gent Wevelgem and knew he had the speed, and form to win.

Earlier a long break was caught, and Ian Stannard followed by Landbouwkrediet/Tonissteiner team mate David Boucher attempted late breaks, but in the end it was the domain of the sprinters and Milram, Silence lOtto and finally Quickstep worked to control the race.

Boonen, thought he had won the race and even raised his arms on the finish line but in fact it was Cavendish who was ruled the winner. "I didn't see Mark beside me," Boonen said afterwards.

"Unfortunately, our tactics weren't quite successful today", Raoul Liebregts, directeur sportif for Team Milram, said. "We controlled the race pretty well and prepared the finish well. Erik tried to stay on Tom Boonen's wheel in order to be prepared to be able to strike at the right time. Unfortunately the others were a bit stronger today. But already tomorrow we're getting another chance to do better."
