 MAJOR CLASSICS 20 / 03 / 08

Milan San Remo 2008

The first major classic race of the 2008 season is the Milan San Remo to be held on March 22. As you can expect it has attracted most of the big hitters, but not Astana, who are excluded.

The leading contenders are Oscar Friere (Rabobank), Tom Boonen (Quickstep), Fillipo Pozzato (Liquigas), Robbie McEwen (Silence Lotto), Erik Zabel and Alessandro Petecchi (Both Milram). Also in the hunt could be Phillipe Gilbert (FDJ), Garcia Acosta and Jose Rojas (Caisse D'epargne). Riding for the Italian Continental Team, Danilo Di Luca could spring a surprise.

The question is, is whether a big lead group will form and from it the sprinters will make hay, or a small group or solo rider will go up the road and stay there.

UK riders are Jeremy Hunt (Agricole), Roger Hammond (High Rd) and David Millar (Slipstream)

After a sluggish start that saw Tom Boonen as the race favourite in our Milan San Remo poll, you are currently voting Oscar Frieire as favourite (You still time to vote)

Freire 34% - Boonen 25% - Petacchi 20% - Pozzato 13% - Zabel 7%
