Potential 2008 Olympic rider Chris Newton (Rapha/Condor/ReCycling.co.uk) has been injured after hitting a car door opened in his path whilst riding today (March 6).

Team Manager John Herety tells us that Chris has a broken collar bone and could be out of the World Track Championships to be held in Manchester at the end of March.

Commenting on the news, British Cycling performance director Dave Brailsford said: “Although this is obviously a disappointment for British Cycling and for Chris, it does not jeopardise his chances of qualifying for the Olympics or his chance of performing well in Beijing.”

Chris, who lives in Oldham, has won a string of international titles. These include Gold medal in the 2006 Commonwealth Wealth Games in Melbourne, a Gold medal in the 2005 World Track Championships in LA, Silver in the 2004 Athens Olympics and Silver in the World Track Championships (Melbourne) of the same year.

In 2002, Chris won Bronze in the World Track Championships and Silver in the Commonwealth Games (Manchester) whilst also achieving great success in the points race that year, winning Gold in the World Track Championships and Bronze in the Commonwealth Games.
