We caught up with Katie Compton at Koksijde for the Dune Cross. held in November 2007, where she talked to us about her bike. Sadly for her her ambitions for a real World title attempt was thwarted by a leg injury.

What are you looking for from a bike?
I'm looking for performance and fit, the geometry has to be dialed in so the bike handles well and the frames need to be both strong and light so the bike has a solid ride yet isn't heavy. Right now Im riding a custom built bike with carbon main tubes and scandium lugs. It makes the ride super plush and the bike nice and laterally stiff and responsive.

Do you vary your bike set up from course to course?
M bike set-up will be pretty similar from one race to the next, the only thing that changes are the tires depending on the conditions of course. We found out this season that campy chains don't work in the mud/sand so we ended up changing all the chains on my bikes thirty minutes before the WC in Pijnacker. That was a little stressful for Mark.

Is there anything about your bike that is specific to you?
The geometry is custom for me and the tubes were also something new my frame builder tried for me. It's my favorite bike, right up there with my custom 29er titanium single speed. I love that bike too, made by the same guy. The bikes just handle like a dream.

Your best moment on this bike was?
Winning at Pijnacker this year (2007/08 season), I had a great race and felt really good, everything came together.

Would you swap it for anything?
No, after riding these bikes I can't go back to stock geometry bikes.

  • Brakes – TRP 950 with cross levers
  • Other -We try to promote smaller companies in Colorado and go after sponsors that we like and that deliver a high-end product. We choose everything because of the way it functions under race conditions and and simply because we've found this equipment to work the best overall. We are currently testing a carbon front derailleur clamp made by Parlee Cycles.
