Pro kit - Shimano carbon cranks

Carbon Dura Ace cranks
Carbon Dura Ace cranks on Markus Fothen's Tarmac

Markus Fothen and members of the Gerolsteiner squad have been testing pre-production carbon Shimano Dura Ace cranks on their Tarmac SLs.

Whilst Campagnolo and SRAM have embraced carbon on their groupsets, Shimano have firmly kept faith with an all aluminum approach. (Other than on their wheelsets) In recent weeks riders in the pro peloton have been testing out Shimano carbon cranks and at the Tour start in London we caught sight of them on Markus Fothen's Tarmac>

Shimano are not entirely averse to carbon and the woven black stuff has made an appearance on the XTR off-road group, but this is the first time that the company has earmarked the road equipment for attention. The prototype cranks have been seen at other races during the year and the Gerolsteiner squad must feel pretty confident about them to be willing to use them on the Tour.
