Garmin Edge 305: A GPS-enabled personal performance trainer and cycle computer

In conjunction with Team Milram and Garmin we're going to bring you a very exclusive insight into the life of a team rider during the 2007 Tour de France.

To monitor their training and racing, Team Milram riders are set up with the Garmin Edge 305, which uses high sensitivity GPS to track their position, speed, distance and elevation. This is then combined with heart rate and cadence to give the riders and the team management a comprehensive analysis tool. Everyday, riders from the Team will be uploading this data to Garmin's web platform www.motionbased.com.

The Garmin Edge 305

The Garmin Edge 305 is both rugged and lightweight and attaches easily to the stem or handlebars of your bike. Just turn it on, acquire GPS satellites and go. The Edge 305 automatically measures your speed, distance, time, calories burned, altitude, climb and descent, and records this data for your review. For extra-precise climb and descent data, Edge 305 also incorporates a barometric altimeter to pinpoint changes in elevation. This can be all tracked through the "Training Centre" software that comes with the unit.

But having all this data is useless unless you have the means to interpret it, and that's where MotionBased comes in. MotionBased is a web application that translates GPS data into functional analysis and online mapping for race, endurance and outdoor athletes.

Stay tuned as this rider diary will begin on 7 July 2007.

Look out for our full product review of the Edge 305 coming soon on www.roadcyclinguk.com.
