Pro bikes - BMC Time Machine

BMC Astana
Astana BMC TT01 Time Machine

Kazak Team Astana ride Swiss designed BMC bikes, and for time trials the weapon of choice is the TT01 Time Machine.

2007 Tour favourite Alexandre Vinokourov used an almost identical bike to win the time trial at the Dauphine TT, with team mate Andrey Kashechkin in second. The bike featured is Kashechkin's.

The carbon-fibre frame uses Easton CNT nanotechnology (Carbon nanotubes employ carbon atoms arranged in a lattice of hexagons and pentagons to achieve the highest degree of stiffness theoretically possible, and are added to the composite's resin matrix) with a build made up from unidirectional carbon-fibres that requires a multi-mould system .

The aerodynamics are carefully considered. BMC say that 'the UCI requires a thickness (profile width) of 25mm and does not allow any profiles with a width/length ratio slimmer than 1:3.' BMC use a 75mm wing profile, right on the limit of what is permitted.

The Time Machine has no steerer tube in the conventional sense. Rather a 'hinge' in the back of the fork does the turning allowing for a flush and tidy front end.

BMC has close ties with Easton and so there is no surprise to find Easton wheels and bars, plus a rather nifty aero carbon-fibre crank from an unknown source.
