 STAGE RACES 31 / 08 / 08

Deutschland Tour 2008 - 2

Deutschland-Tour 2008

The eight stage Deutschland Tour began on Friday, August 29, in Austria and ends on September 6 in Bremen.

Stage 2 München/Region Hesselberg (182,6km)
Kasper Klostergaard of Team CSC/Saxo Bank was in a break with Bernhard Kohl (Gerolsteiner), Markel Irizar (Euskaltel) and Yoann Le Boulanger (Francaise des Jeux), but Team Columbia and the sprinter teams didn't give them much room so their lead never really amounted to much. With five kilometers to go they were caught by the peloton in spite of a stubborn effort by the young Dane.

A good climb during the final two kilometers acted as a stepping stone for more attacks and the end result was victory for David De La Fuente (Scott-American Beef), who crossed the finish line two seconds ahead of a small group of five, who had been among the top-5 in Saturday's stage, closely followed by the peloton.

"It was a fast stage. The first 100 kilometers were over in less than two hours and it was very difficult to escape, so it was a great performance by Kasper to make that break. At the same time it should be said that it wasn't just a lucky punch because he'd been in all the action up until the group was formed after 85 kilometers," said Team CSC Saxo Bank sports director Kim Andersen after the stage.

"We'll continue to try for stage wins over the next few days," said Kim Andersen.
